Situation in Brief: Hostile activity in the Wonju area decreased during the period, with the largest scale engagement reported involving an estimated 2 enemy companies. A 7th U.S. Infantry Division patrol withdrew after encounter- ing an estimated 1,000 enemy, 18 miles southeast of Wonju. Other elements of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division engaged approximately 200 enemy, 8 miles northeast of Tanyang, and a smaller group which had established a road- block and mined the road 9 miles west of Tanyang. Frontline contact in the U.S. I and IX Corps sectors remained at patrol level; however, air observers continued to report considerable hostile movement southward, particularly in the Osan area where a group estimated at 5,000 was seen. Moderating weather facilitated the unbeaching operations of PRASAE. Task Force 77 planes flew 65 sorties; and TRESEUS planes flew 13 sorties. U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 600 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET) 2. Weather: Scattered to broken high and middle clouds over the area south of 38th parallel, and broken low clouds in the east coastal areas. Forecast: From 1800/12(KT) to 1800/13(KT) clear to scattered clouds with good visi- bility. Minimum temperature in battle area will be 15 degrees F. (FEAF) (SECRET) 3. United Nation s' Situation: GROUND a U.S. I Corps: A small CCF group withdrew at 1300/11 (KT) after a fire fight with a friendly group 1 mile south of Osan, Air observers continued to report numerous hostile groups, one of which was estimated at 5,000, in the Seoul-Suwon area and considerable movement southward. A total of some 750 enemy troops were killed by air strikes in the Osan area on 11 January.
