Situation in Brief: The U.S. I and IX Corps resumed reconnaissance operations early on 26 January. No hostile troops were encountered as 2 battalions of the 35th U.S. RCT swept Suwon; however a Turkish battalion was en- gaged with an unknown number of enemy in Kummyangjang. In the center of the U.N. front, activity was generally confined to patrol operations. Elements of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division again patrolled north from Won- ju to Hoengsong without encountering the enemy. ROK patrols ranging of miles north of Yongwol reported no hostile contact. The only contact in forward areas east of the Han River, consisted of a patrol engagement with 60 enemy 10 miles southwest of Wonju. Little activity was reported in rear areas, except the area southeast of Andong where the 7th U.S. Marine Regiment repulsed an attack on its Command Post. Other elements of this Regiment were in contact with an enemy company in the same area. A U.N. Naval task force silenced enemy batteries on Wolmi Island. Task Force 77 aircraft flew 141 sorties, and BATAAN aircraft flew 36 sorties on 25 January; while U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 731 sorties. (FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: On 26 January, the weather was scattered to occasional broken low clouds in western Korea, becoming clear during the day. Clear else- where in Korea. Forecast: Weather for 27 January is forecast to be clear with occasional scattered low clouds in all areas. Minimum temperature expected in the battle area will be 5 degrees F. (FEAF) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: GROUND a. U.S. Eighth Army: Effective 1800/26 (KT), the boundary between U. S. X Corps and ROK JII Corps was changed so that it runs from Yongwol approximately due north for 35 miles. In the 1st U.S. Marine Division area, contact with the enemy was on patrol level except for a re- ported engagement with a company of hostile troops 3 miles northeast of the 7th U.S. Marine Regiment's Command Post in the Topyong area.
