Weather: On 31 January, there were broken to overcast low clouds along the west coastal area; all other areas had clear to scattered clouds. Visibility was good except for light haze and fog in the early morning. Forecast for 1 February: Broken to overcast middle and low clouds, with light snow and rain showers. Clearing over Korea north of 37N by late afternoon. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. United Nations Situation: GROUND a. U.S. I Corps: On 31 January, hostile resistance to the United Nations offensive continued to be stubborn in mountainous terrain, but was practically nil on the flanks. During the morning of 1 February, the attack of U.S. I and IX Corps units was seriously restricted by weather. In some localities visibility was less than 50 yards; in spite of this, some progress was reported. Forward elements of the 25th U.S. Infantry Divi- sion straightened and adjusted their positions northwest and west of Suwon on 31 January. An enemy attack in company strength against elements of the 15th ROK Regiment 6 miles north of Suwon was broken up by artillery fire. By darkness on 31 January, units of the Turkish Brigade had ad- vanced to positions 8 miles northwest of Suwon, and the 35th U.S. Infantry RCT occupied a line 6 miles northwest of Suwon without opposition. In the 3d U.S. Infantry Division area, the majority of the front line units were heavily engaged with the eneray northeast of Suwon. The 1st Battalion, 65th U.S. RCT, overcame stubborn resistance and drove the enemy from a hill 3 miles northeast of Suwon after a four hour fight. Other elements of the 65th RCT encountered light to moderate resistance while advancing to positions 5 miles northeast of Suwon. An enemy company repulsed a friendly attack in the same general area, but other elements of the 15th U.S. Infantry RCT drove company-sized enemy units from high ground 6 to 8 miles northeast of Suwon after overcoming stubborn resistance.
