2. United Nations Situation:
GROUND
a. U.S. I Corps: 1st ROK and 3d U.S. Infantry Divisions pat-
rolled from previously reported positions generally along the south bank
of the Han River. No change in positions of the 25th U.S. Division, with
activity limited to light contact and patrolling. (FECOM)(SECRET)
b. U.S. IX Corps: The U.S. 24th Infantry Division and the
1st U.S. Cavalry Division patrolled from previously reported positions,
encountering several enemy groups, the largest of which was in battalion
strength 5 miles north of Chipyong. The other battalion-size enemy
groups were also observed in this general area, making a possible total
of three enemy battalions opposite the 1st Cavalry Division sector. On
28 February, the 5th U.S. Cavalry Regiment attacked and advanced ap-
proximately 1 mile against light resistance to an area 6 miles northeast
of Chipyong. The Australian Battalion of the 27th British Commonwealth
Brigade seized the high ground 2 1/2 miles north of Songjong after heavy
fighting against an enemy battalion. Another enemy battalion holds the
high ground 1, 100 yards west of the position taken by the Australian
Battalion. The 6th ROK Division slightly adjusted positions after dispers-
ing 2 enemy companies 3 1/2 miles west of Hoengsong. 1st U.S. Marine
Division: No significant activity reported due to readjustment and con-
solidation of positions. (FECOM)(SECRET)
