Weather: Broken to overcast low clouds with broken middle and high clouds. Visibility three to five miles in rain and thunderstorms, Forecast: Scattered high, broken low and middle clouds with cumulus and thunder- storm conditions. Visibility seven miles. Temperatures 76 to 89 degrees F. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Hostile groups attacked two 1st US Cavalry Division positions near Chorwon in the western sector, forcing some friendly withdrawals. A heavy artillery barrage accompanied one of these attacks. Three other small probing attacks in the same area, and one against UN positions northeast of Yanggu, were all repulsed. Intense small-arms fire was encountered near Kumhwa, (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: GROUND a. General: Friendly patrols probed enemy defenses across the entire front against light to moderate resistance, reaching Pyonggang in the western sector. The 7th US Infantry Division relieved the 24th US Infantry Division on the IX Corps front; the 25th Canadian Brigade was relieved by elements of the 1st US Cavalry Division and moved to assembly areas east of Munsan under control of the 1st British Commonwealth Divi- sion; and the French Battalion, relieved on the line by 2d US Infantry Divi- sion elements, moved to an assembly area southwest of Sohwa in the X Corps sector.
