Weather: Heavy fog over west and northwest lowlands and valleys persisted from early morning till 1100(KT). Broken to overcast ceilings over Korea north of 39 degrees improving to 5/10 by 1400(KT). Visibility and clouds other- wise were 10 miles and clear. Maximum temperature 74 degrees, minimum 50. Forecast: Fog and stratus along west and.east coast improving to 7 miles visiblity and broken ceilings by 1100(KT). North Korea otherwise generally clear with good visibility. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Resistance decreased west of Chorwon, where groups of up to battalion size engaged UN forces in several brief fire-fights. Activity continued heavy in the east-central sector, north of Yanggu, where well entrenched groups fought stubbornly against UN attacking forces. Five tanks were observed be- hind enemy lines in this area. Larger size enemy groups were encountered east of Kaesong by UN patrols in the western sector. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for 8-9 October is 2, 180, of which 1, 466 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: a. General; UN forces continued to attack north of Yanggu and made slight gains against strong enemy resistance from groups of up to bat- talion size. Units attacking west of Chorwon, in the western sector, also made minor gains against determined resistance. Task forces of the 25th US In- fantry Division destroyed six bunkers north of Kumhwa. Other unit forces repulsed hostile probing attacks across the front and continued to probe enemy defensive positions. Eighth Army assumed control of the 7th US Division, less division artillery and the 31st Infantry Regiment.
