1. Weather:
A cold front passed through Korea over the weekend, causing gener-
ally overcast conditions with cloud bases varying from 15, 000 feet in the
west down to 600 feet in the east. Forecast: Same general overcast con-
ditions with visibility unrestricted except in showers and fog. Maximum
temperature 75 degrees, minimum 56. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Resistance was decreasing against UN attacking forces in the central
sector, north of Hwachon, but remained heavy in the high-ground area north
of Yanggu. Activity decreased in the western sector west of Chorwon and
north of Yonchon. A heavy rocket and mortar barrage (type, number, and
caliber not reported) fell on 1st US Cavalry Division positions, ten miles
southwest of Chorwon. On the night of 12 October, an unidentified aircraft
dropped three yellow and one blue flares near Chorwon. Moderate to heavy
mortar and arillery fire fell on UN positions in the Western sector. The
adjusted total of vehicle sightings for the period 11-13 October is 1, 041,
of which 691 were southbound. The preliminary total for 13-14 October is
226, of which 15 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
ARMY:
a. General: UN forces in the central sector attacked on 13
October north of Hwachon and gained up to three miles against moderate to
heavy resistance. Other UN elements continued to attack north of Yanggu
and made gains of up to two miles against well entrenched groups. Units
in the western sector, west and southwest of Chorwon, consolidated posi-
tions and repulsed hostile probing attacks. Other UN forces continued to
probe enemy defensive positions and repulsed several probing attacks,
with slight friendly withdrawals at two points in the IX US Corps sector.
ROK forces on the east coast continued to attack objectives south of Kosong
and gained approximately one mile against moderate resistance. (FECOM)
