Weather: On 16 October, scattered clouds prevailed over most of Korea. Forecast: Scattered clouds are expected to become broken during the afternoon of 17 October with scattered showers. Broken to overcast high and middle low clouds over North Korea and scattered to broken middle clouds over South Korea will follow in the evening. Maximum temperature 70 degrees; minimum 48. Enemy Situation: Resistance increased sharply in the western sector, northwest of Yonchon, where a. regiment deployed in bunkers stubbornly resisted with intense fire from small arms, automatic weapons, and 2300 rounds of mortar and artillery fire. Resistance was also heavy against the 6th ROK Division, north of Hwachon, where a battalion=strength group in- creased to an estimated regiment and the engagement was continuing at the close of the period. Resistance was lighter in the east-central sec- tor north of Yanggu, although six small probing attacks were made in this sector. Southwest of Kumsong, in the 2d ROK Division sector, UN groups reported a general northward movement of enemy troops in all draws, stream beds, and trails during 16 October. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for 15-16 October is 521, of which 341 were south.. bound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: 2. General: UN forces continued to attack in the western and central sectors but were limited to slight gains in heavy fighting. In the central sector, UN forces consolidated positions generally four miles south of Kumsong and continued to attack against moderate to heavy resistance. ROK forces reported capture of a high-ground objective south of Kosong on the east coast on 15 October against resistance from two hos- tile battalions, In other sectors, UN elements continued to probe enemy defensive positions.
