1. Weather:
Weather on 17 October was generally good throughout Korea. Today,
18 October, there were scattered high and middle clouds over North Korea
increasing to broken during the day. Visibility restricted in light fog dur-
ing early morning and early daylight hours. Forecast: High and middle
clouds will dissipate during the night. In the afternoon increasing high
clouds in the south. Visibility unrestricted except for fog along coast per-
sisting until 1000 hours. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Company-and battalion-size groups stubbornly resisted UN advances
in the western sector, northwest of Yonchon, and in the central sector,
south of Kumsong. One company-strength counterattack southwest of Kum-
song forced a UN unit to withdraw approximately 1,000 yards. Other strong
counterattacks were made against UN positions southeast of Kumsong and
south of Kosong. Heavy mortar and artillery fire fell on 1st US Cavalry Divi-
sion positions in the western sector. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings
for 16-17 October is 842, of which 551 were southbound (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
ARMY:
a. General: Gains up to 2, 000 yards were made by UN forces
attacking in the central sector, south of Kumsong, against bitter resistance.
Attacking forces in the western sector, northwest of Yonchon, were unable
to make appreciable gains against stubborn company- and battalion-size
groups. Attacks continued against high-ground objectives north and north-
west of Yanggu. Other UN forces continued to probe enemy defensive posi-
tions and engaged in numerous patrol clashes. The I US Corps assumed
operational control of the 9th ROK Division. (FECOM) (SECRET)
