1. Weather:
On 22 October, weather consisted of a high thin overcast at 30,000
feet lowering to broken and overcast clouds at 25, 000 feet. Scattered to
broken low clouds developed over the south coastal area by evening. Fore-
cast: Scattered low and middle clouds, visibility three to five miles in
haze lowering in rain showers to two to four miles, Maximum tempera-
ture 60 degrees, minimum 48. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Resistance decreased sharply across the front, as platoon= and com.*
pany-size groups opposed UN attacks and patrols. Three small probing
attacks were made near Chorwon, one north of Yanggu, and four in the east
coast area, northeast of Sohwa. Mortar and artillery fire continued moder-
ate to heavy on 1st US Cavalry Division positions, northwest of Yonchon.
The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for 20-22 October is 3,961, of which
2g 854 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
ARMY:
a. General: UN forces continued to attack in the central sector
against light resistance. A tank patrol from the 24th US Infantry Division
advanced to the vicinity of Kumsong and destroyed six buildings. Other at-
tacking elements made gains of up to 2,000 yards in this area. Activity was
also light in other sectors, as UN forces continued to probe enemy defen-
sive positions and engaged scattered small groups in patrol clashes. Enemy
probing attacks were repulsed. The 7th US Infantry Division assumed
responsibility for the 2d US Infantry Division sector, north of Yanggu, in
the X US Corpsizone, on the morning of 23 October. The 9th Regiment, of
the 2d US Division, and the Netherlands Battalion were attached to the 7th
US Division and maintained previous positions in the line, The 38th Regi-
ment, of the 2d US Division, was attached to the IX US Corps on 22 October.
The 5th ROK Division, recently relieved in the X US Corps zone by the 3d
ROK Division, passed to ROK Army control 221800 (KT). (FECOM) (SECRET)
