1. On 24 October, ten F-84's, after bombing in the Sunchon area,
climbed to 25,000 feet to provide escort for 8 B-29's flying eastward toward
the Wonsan area. About 40 miles west northwest of Wonsan at 1523 (KT) 50
MIG's were observed at altitudes up to 32,000 feet. An undetermined number
of the MIG's attacked the bombers, breaking off the attack when the F-84's
turned into them. Sixteen Meteors were flying close cover for B-29's about
50 miles west northwest of Hungnam at 24, 000 feet when 20 MIG's attacked
the bombers. Midway between Sunchon and Wonsan 20 additional MIG's entered
the fight with some breaking through the fighter defense to shoot down 1 B-29.
The MIG'S broke off the attack 40 miles NW of Wonsan. On a sweep of the
Sinanju area 35 F-86's observed 70 MIG's in the encounter with the Meteors.
Results for the 24th: 1 MIG destroyed; 2 F-86's lost (pilots MIA), 1 F-86 lost
when crash-landed at home base, 1 B-29 lost. (FEAF) (SECRET)
m. On 23 October, eight B-29's bombing Namsi Airfield were at-
tacked by approximately 50 MIG'S for a duration of about 20 minutes. An esti-
mated 140 MIG'S were in the area. Friendly escorting fighters were greatly
outnumbered. The enemy aircraft attacked the bomber formation vigorously
with individual aircraft, and in elements of 2 and 3 in trail, and 4 abreast,
closing to within 50 feet and passing through the bomber formation. The at-
tacks were from level and above from all directions. Results for 23 October:
3 B-29's lost and 5 received major damage; bombers claimed 2 MIG's destroyed,
and 3 probably destroyed; fighters claim 3 MIG's destroyed, 1 probably de-
stroyed, and 8 damaged. One F-84 was lost. Also on 23 October at 2057 (KT)
an unidentified eneray aircraft at 8500 feet made one firing pass on a B-26 about
30 miles east of Pyongyang. Crew believes enemy aircraft was a jet due to
an estimated 400 mph speed and possible nose guns. (FEAF) (SECRET)
n. Preliminary reports for 25 October state that 31 F-86's en-
countered 50 plus MIG's north of Kunu-ri. One MIG was damaged. There
were no friendly aircraft lost or damaged. (FEAF) (SECRET)
