Weather: Broken to overcast clouds and showers over all Korea becoming clear. Visibility 1 to 2 miles in snow showers, otherwise unrestricted. Battle area temperature 3 to 24 degrees. Forecast: Clear becoming scattered low clouds. Visibility unrestricted, Temperatures 0 to 28. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity was limited to patrol intercepts during the period. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for 22-23 January is 2, 568, of which 1, 991 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: a. General: UN forces continued to engage enemy groups in patrol clashes across the front. West of Chorwon, a company-sized raiding group from the 45th US Division encountered resistance from an estimated enemy battalion, (FECOM) (SECRET) b. I US Corps: Patrols from the 1st ROK, 1st British Common- wealth, and the 3d US Divisions encountered resistance from enemy groups up to platoon size, Eight miles west of Chorwon, a company-strength raiding group from the 45th US Division was opposed by an estimated enemy battalion. During this engagement, 500 rounds of enemy mortar and artillery fire were directed against the friendly raiding group. Just north of this engagement, friendly artillery destroyed an enemy tank. A patrol from the 9th ROK Divi- sion engaged an enemy platoon west-northwest of Chorwon, (FECOM) (SECRET) DECLASSIFIED E.O. 12065, Sec. 3-402 DOD Directive 5100.30, June 18, 1979.
