1. Weather:
During the period ending 1800 (KT) on 18 March, broken to overcast
middle clouds prevailed over Korea. Maximum battle area temperature was
60 degrees, minimum 30. Forecast: Generally same cloud conditions in
morning, becoming scattered by early afternoon. Visibility unrestricted except
for Seoul area. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Eneray Situation:
Enemy activity flared briefly in the western sector during the early
morning of 18 March, with a series of attacks by enemy groups of up to
battalion strength (aggregating approximately one regiment). Otherwise
across the front, scattered, generally light patrol clashes were reported, with
the most numerous contacts in the Pukhan River sector. Light to moderate
mortar and artillery fire was received in several sectors. A total of 12 enemy
armored vehicles were observed in the area 12 to 15 miles southwest of Chorwon.
The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for the period 16-17 March is 3, 034, of
which 2, 156 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
ARMY:
a. General: UN forces repulsed a series of enemy attacks of platoon to
battalion size in the area 7 to 11 miles northeast of Panmunjorn and maintained
aggressive patrol operations across the remainder of the front. The Capitol
ROK Division (minus) is enroute to an assembly area in the vicinity of Chunchon.
The 26th ROK Regiment of this Division passed to operational control of the IX
US Corps and moved to the vicinity of Chunchon. The 1st ROK Regiment of this
Division passed from operational control of the 3d ROK Division to operational
control of the 40th US Infantry Division and moved to an assembly area in the
Division sector. The 1st Korean Marine Regiment passed from operational control
of the 1st US Marine Division and X US Corps to operational control of the I US
Corps and moved to an assembly area nine miles least of Uijongbu. The 31st
US Infantry Regiment of the 7th US Division, with the Colombian Battalion
attached, passed to operational control of the X US Corps and assembled in the
vicinity of Toksan. (FECOM) (SECRET)
