Weather: Weather was marginal to operational during most of the period, being fully operational only on 11 July. 2. Enemy Situation: Beginning on the night of 10 July, two enemy companies, supported by heavy mortar and artillery fire, attacked 5th ROK Division positions four miles south of Kosong, near the east coast. Friendly units initially withdrew, and the enemy occupied a hill position. Bitter fighting for this objective continued during the remainder of the period, with enemy groups of up to battalion size launching a total of seven attacks and ROK forces counterattacking repeatedly. Coordinated bombardment by UN Air, Navy, and artillery on 13 July permitted friendly groups to reoccupy the hill. Hostile forces again counterattacked early on the morning of 14 July but were repulsed. More than 5, 800 rounds of enemy mortar and artillery fire fell on the 5th ROK Division positions during the 4 day engagement. Elsewhere across the front, activity was light, with 7 of the 15 UN Divisions on the front re- porting no enemy contact on 11 and 12 July. Total enemy mortar and artillery fire for the period was nearly 20,000 rounds. The adjusted total of vehicle sightings for the period is 3,828, of which 2, 222 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: ROK forces near the east coast repulsed numerous strong enemy attacks and at last reports were occupying their objective south of Kosong. Other UN raider patrols continued to probe enemy positions against scattered resistance. On 10 July, a tank supported battalion-size raiding party from the 45th US Division engaged an undetermined number of enemy west of Chorwon. On 13 July, elements of the 1st British Commonwealth Division engaged an enemy battalion 13 miles northeast of Panmunjom in a 50-minute fight. The Korean Communication Zone was established as a major command of FEC on 10 July, Headquarters and Head- quarters Company, KCZ, provisional, will be organized at Taegu by 25 July and will become operational at 010001 August. The 1st ROK Division passed from operational control of the I US Corps to the ROK Army at 110800 July and commenced anti-guerrilla operations in extrème south central and southwestern Korea.
