Weather: The weather on Thursday, Friday and Saturday was mostly non-operational due to rain and fog, lifting slightly on Sunday to marginal during the day with low clouds and rain. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity flared in the west sector where a battalion-size attack against positions of the 2d US Division 12 miles west of Chorwon during the night 17-18 July initiated a 4-day seesaw battle for Hill No. 266. Ac- tion ceased during the early morning hours of 21 July when elements of an enemy company were forced to withdraw from the crest of the hill. Elsewhere across the front, enemy forces up to two platoons in size launched sporadic probing attacks against UN elements, and enemy groups up to company size offered effective re- sistance to UN patrols and raiding groups. Enemy mortar and artillery fire during the 4-day period totaled 27, 982 rounds, of which 17, 216 rounds fell in the I US Corps sector (over 10g 000 rounds in the 2d US Division sector on 18 July). Sight- ings of enemy vehicle traffic for the period totaled 2, 050, of which 881 were south bound. On two days, vehicle sightings were negative because of poor weather con- ditions. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: UN forces in the west sector repulsed repeated enemy attacks against hill positions west of Chorwon and launched several effective counterattacks, driving enemy forces from the crest of the hill during the early morning hours of 21 July.
