1. Weather:
Weather during the period 28-30 July consisted generally of broken to
low clouds with rain and fog restricting visibility to 1-3 miles. Battle area
temperatures ranged from 69 to 72 degrees. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity diminished, with ground operations hampered by poor
weather during the period. The principal action occurred in the west sector
where, during the night 28-29 July, an enemy company seized outpost positions
in the 3d US Division sector, northwest of Yonchon, and repulsed several
friendly counterattacks during the morning of 29 July. Elsewhere across the
front, enemy activity was limited to minor probing attacks of squad and
platoon strength. Scattered groups of enemy,up to platoon size, opposed friendly
raider groups and patrols, with engagements of up to six hours. No enemy
activity was reported in 10 of the 15 UN Division sectors on 30 July. During
the period of this report, hostile mortar and artillery fire totalled 6, 222 rounds,
of which 2, 828 fell in the I US Corps sector. The total mortar and artillery
fire for the week ending 30 July(inclusive) was 20, 214 rounds, of which 9, 327
fell in the I US Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic totalled 1, 940,
of which 1, 220 were southbound. Vehicle sightings were negative on the last
two days of the period, owing to poor weather conditions. (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
ARMY:
United Nations elements in the west sector counterattacked on 29 and
30 July and regained outpost positions northwest of Yonchon which had been taken
by the enemy during the night of 28-29 July. Elsewhere across the front, UN
forces continued aggressive patrol and raider operations against generally light
opposition and repulsed scattered minor probing attacks. (FECOM) (SECRET)
