Weather: Weather during the period comprised scattered low clouds over most of Korea on the 5th and 6th, with some lowering visibilities due to haze and smoke. Otherwise weather was generally fair. Battle area temperatures ranged from 92 to 65. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity, except in the central sector, diminished during the period. On 4 August, nine of the UN divisions reported no enemy contact in their sectors, and action was characterized by minor probing attacks northwest of Yonchon and west of Chorwon. On 5 August, the entire western half of the front, from near Kumhwa to the Han River, was without contact except for light mortar and artillery fire. Southeast of Kumsong during the night 5-6 August, three platoon-size attacks and one two-squad-size attack were launched against OP positions of the Capitol ROK Division, with heavy mortar and artillery fire support. Action continued throughout 6 August with groups up to company size being engaged, and the UN elements were forced to withdraw from the OP position. Elsewhere, minor patrol actions were reported in scattered locations with an increased number of such clashes on 6 August. South of Panmunjom, on 5 August, ground observers re- ported heavy enemy troop activity, with northward movement of numerous groups up to company size. Similar activity on a lesser scale was also observed on 6 August. Hostile mortar and artillery fire during this period totalled 20, 592 rounds, of which 10, 638 rounds fell in the II ROK Corps sector. Almost all of it accom- panied the action during the night of 5-6 August and the day of 6 August. The total mortar and artillery fire for the week ending 6 August (inclusive) was 41, 066 rounds of which over 16, 000 rounds fell in the I US Corps sector and over 12,000 rounds in the II ROK Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic during the period totalled 2, 034, of which 998 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: UN forces in the west sector repulsed minor probing attacks on 4 August. UN forces in the central sector counterattacked against stubborn enemy opposition of company strength on 6 August and reestablished OP positions south- east of Kumsong.
