1. Weather:
Weather for the period 11-13 August inclusive was operational, character
ized by scattered to broken high, middle and low clouds with occasional rain
showers. Maximum battle area temperature was 99 degrees; minimum 69 de-
grees. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2 Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity decreased across most of the front, except in the west
sector. Previously reported action southeast of Kumsong terminated on 10 August
with UN elements in possession of the disputed positions. Severe fighting con-
tinued in the west sector over OP positions on Hill 122, about four miles east-
northeast of Panmonjum throughout the period. Enemy troops up to reinforced
battalion strength launched a series of attacks against the positions during each
night of the period. About three miles northeast of Hill 122, attacks from platoon
to reinforced=company size were made. Engagements lasted up to six hours in
these two locations. An attack by two enemy companies against UN positions
four miles south of Kosong, on the east coast, resulted in a three hour engage
ment during the night 11-12 August. Elsewhere across the front, scattered minor
probing attacks and patrol clashes were reported, with a slight increase in the
number of patrol clashes in mid-period. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for
the period totalled 22, 671 rounds, of which 12,278 rounds fell in the I US Corps
sector=-most of it in the 1st Marine Division area. The total mortar and artillery
fire for the week ending 13 August (inclusive) was 75g 292 rounds--a record-high
weekly total, This included a record-high day of 21,688 rounds. The II ROK Corps
received more than 28g 800 rounds, and the I US Corps received more than 26,900
rounds. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic for the period totalled 3, 082, of which
1,808 were southbound. (FFCOM) (SECRET)
