2. Enemy Situation:
During the first two days of the period, enemy activity continued heavy in the
west sector, where attacks of battalion and reinforced battalion size were directed
against UN positions on Hill 122, four miles east-northeast of Panmunjom. Heavy
mortar and artillery fire supported these enemy attacks, and engagements lasted
up to three hours. Activity diminished in this area on the third day of the period
with only one brief probe reported, and on the last day only scattered patrol actions
were reported. Also in the west sector, in the vicinity of Otan, near the Imjin
River, enemy up to platoon strength launched a series of attacks against OP posi-
tions of the 3d US Division during the first two days of the period, seized the OF,
and repulsed friendly counterattacks. In the central sector, fighting over CP
positions about 12 miles southeast of Kumaong was resumed on 14 August when
enemy in 2-platoon strength seized OF positions and repulsed friendly counterattacks
in engagements up to six hours. Seesaw fighting continued throughout 15 and 16
August, with enemy up to company-plus strength launching attacks and counterattacks
against friendly elements. On 17 August enemy troops were forced to withdraw from
the crest of the hill after a three hour engagement, but a later enemy counterattack
in reinforced-platoon strength forced a. slight withdrawal of friendly elements. Else-
where across the front, activity was limited to a few generally light probing attacks
and scattered patrol clashes, decreasing during the last two days of the period.
