Weather: Except for marginal weather on the first day, following the heavy tropical storm, weather for the period was generally good, with scattered to broken clouds and visibility from 7 to 10 miles. Maximum temperature was 88 degrees and mini- mum was 62 degrees, Farenheit. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity continued light, decreasing as the period closed. Action was characterized by sporadic probing attacks, none larger than platoon size, and scattered, generally light patrol clashes with brief engagements involving small numbers of enemy. On the first and third days of the period, five of the UN divisions reported no enemy contact in their sectors, and on the second day, seven of the UN divisions reported no enemy contact. The highlight of the period was a probing attack by two enemy squads against positions of the 1st Commonwealth Division west of Yonchon. This resulted in a two-hour engagement. A minor probing attack against positions of the 1st Marine Division on Hill 122 was made on each of the first two days of the period; both were repulsed after brief engage- ments. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the period totalled 10, 027 rounds, of which 5, 111 fell in the I US Corps sector about half of it in the 1st US Marine Division area. The total mortar and artillery fire for the week ending 20 August, inclusive, was 43, 432 rounds, 22,400 rounds of which fell in the I US Corps sector and about 11, 250 rounds in the II ROK Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic for the period (with the second day's sightings negative owing to poor weather) totalled 902, of which 355 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET) 3. United Nations Situation: ARMY: United Nations forces maintained positions across the front and repulsed minor enemy probing attacks at various locations. UN troops continued aggressive patrol operations in forward areas against scattered, generally light opposition.
