JOINT SITREP NO. 528
(Maps Attached)
From 0700/21 Aug (EDT) to 0700/25 Aug (EDT)
From 2100/21 Aug (Korea) to 0700/25 Aug (Korea)
1. Weather:
During the period 21-24 August the weather ranged from good the 20-21st to
marginal the 22nd and marginal to non-operational the 23-24th. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity was unusually light throughout the period, particularly on the
last day when poor, weather hampered operations. Brief probing attacks in squad
and platoon strength and scattered light patrol clashes characterized enemy activity
throughout the period. Two probing attacks, the largest of platoon size lasting
twenty minutes, were made against outpost positions of the 1st US Marine Division
on Hill 122 (four miles east-northeast of Panmunjom) on 23 August. Both attacks
were repulsed. On the morning of 22 August, 32 rounds of 132-mm. rocket fire
fell in the 1st US Marine Division sector about 6 miles south of Panmunjom. This
is the first report of enemy rocket fire in the last six months. Hotile mortar and
artillery fire for the period totalled 15, 964 rounds, with the I US and II ROK Corps
sectors receiving most of it. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic for the period, with
the last day's sightings negative owing to poor weather, totalled 4, 808, of which
2g 815 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
ARMY:
United Nations forces maintained positions across the front and repulsed
small scale enemy probing attacks. Patrol operations in forward areas were
conducted against scattered light opposition. (FECOM) (SECRET)
NAVY:
Naval and Marine aircraft flew a total of 631 sorties, including 361 from
ESSEX and PRINCETON on the east coast, 36 by Patrons, and 234 by shore-based
USMC. East coast carrier aircraft flew no sorties on 22 or 24 August; but struck
enemy targets from Chongjin south to Wonsan on 21 and 23 August. Six MIG-15's
engaged 12 Panther jets south of Anju on 20 August; no damage to friendly or enemy
aircraft. No report was received of operations by west coast carrier aircraft or
the 1st MAW. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET)
