Weather: Weather throughout the period was generally poor, and only on the 24th was it operational and good. The rest of the period was operational for only part of each day with extended overcasts and heavy rain. Battle area temperatures ranged from a low of 25 degrees to a high of 62 degrees F. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity increased during this period, with heavy fighting con- tinuing in the west-central sector, while action flared in the west sector, northeast of PANMUNJOM, and in the east-central sector, north of YANG- GU. In the IX US Corps sector, the enemy continued to defend successfully his positions on HILL 391, northeast of CHORWON and in the vicinity of TRIANGLE HILL (HILL 598) and SNIPER RIDGE (HILL 538) north and north- east of KUMEWA, Enemy forces of up to battalion strength were engaged, and launched a number of counterattacks against UN elements. Southeast of KUMSONG, enemy forces launched a number of probing attacks in the FINGER RIDGE area with forces up to four-company strength in the early portion of the period. The attacks were repulsed and, as the period closed, there was no enemy contact reported in this sector. In the east-central sector, north of YANGGU, during the last two days of the period, enemy elements up to battalion strength attacked OP and MLR positions of the 40th US Division in engagements of up to two-hours in duration. The attacks were repulsed, al- though in one instance elements of an enemy battalion reached within 35 yards of UN main line positions. In the west sector, enemy attacks to battal- ion strength were launched against positions of the 1st Commonwealth Divi- sion, west of YONCHON, on the first day of the period. Action in this area diminished to no ground contact at the close of the period.
