(Maps attached)
From 0700/27 Oct (EST) to 0700/30 Oct (EST)
From 2100/27 Oct (Korea) to 2100/30 Oct (Korea)
1. Weather:
Weather for the period was operational except for part of the last day
when it became marginal. There was overcast throughout the period with
fog in the central sector on the 27th and 29th, and rain in the NW sector on
the 28th. Battle area temperatures ranged from a low of 33 degrees to a
high of 61 degrees F. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Heavy fighting continued in the CHORWON-KUMHWA area throughout
the period, and heavy fighting occurred northeast of PANMUNJOM, south-
east of KUMSONG, and north of YANGGU during the first two days of the
period. In the CHORWON area, enemy forces of up to two-company strength
successfully defended their positions on the crest of HILL 391 and overran
several UN OP positions on the south slope of the hill. In the KUMHWA
area, enemy forces to reinforced-battalion strength continued to defend po-
sitions in the vicinity of HILL 598 and SNIPER RIDGE, launching a number
of strong probes and counterattacks. The heaviest fighting occurred on
SNIPER RIDGE where, in a continuing see-saw battle, positions changed
hands several times during the period. Heavy fighting occurred over OP po-
sitions of the 7th US Division at three locations northwest of KUMHWA and
northeast of CHORWON, with enemy elements of two-company strength seiz-
ing two positions and repulsing UN efforts to regain them Action was con-
tinuing as the period closed. Ten miles northeast of PANMUNJOM, action
ceased on 28 October after a reinforced enemy battalion was driven from
previously captured UN OP positions by very heavy UN artillery fires. In
the central and east-central sectors, southeast of KUMSONG and north of
YANGGU, numerous enemy probing attacks of up to battalion=strength failed
to secure UN OP positions on FINGER RIDGE and were repulsed from OP
and MLR positions east of the YANGGU/MAREWI Road. Elsewhere, numer-
ous patrol clashes were reported with a marked decrease noted in most
sectors as the period closed. Hostile mortar and artillery fire totalled ap-
proximately 73, 600 rounds during the period, of which approximately 29,800
