Weather: The weather varied from non-operational to operational on each day of the period. On the 30th, 1st, and 2d there was extensive fog in central Korea, and the central battle sector. On the 31st there was a general heavy overcast with rain. Broken low cloud cover was general over the entire area throughout the period. Battle area temperatures ranged from a low of 30 degrees to a high of 65 degrees F. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity continued heavy in the IX US Corps sector and flared briefly in the I US and II ROK Corps sectors. Principal action continued to be in the KUMHWA area, where enemy forces to three-battalion strength launched numerous attacks against UN elements on TRIANGLE HILL seiz- ing hillcrest positions in the early morning of 31 October after severe fight- ing. The see-saw battle continued over these positions throughout the period. Positions changed hands numerous times and, as the period closed, the enemy was in possession and had repulsed several UN counterattacks. On SNIPER RIDGE, enemy elements to reinforced-company strength launched numerous attacks against UN positions, all of which were repulsed in heavy fighting. Action is continuing in this area. Northwest of KUMHWA, heavy fighting occurred throughout most of the period; the enemy made numerous attacks and counterattacks in up to battalion strength against UN OP and ML.R positions. In the western sector, during the night 31 October-1 Novem- ber, the enemy launched a total of seven attacks (two of battalion strength) against OP positions of the 1st Marine Division at five locations south of PANMUNJOM, but in each instance was forced to withdraw. In the central sector, on 1 November, enemy elements to company strength opposed raid- ing parties of the 3d ROK Division near the PUKHAN River, southeast of KUMSONG. Elsewhere across the front, numerous scattered probes and patrol clashes, with generally small enemy groups engaged, were reported.
