Washington, D. C.
17 November 1952
JOINT SITREP NO. 552
(Maps attached)
From 0700/13 Nov (EST) to 0700/17 Nov (EST)
From 2100/13 Nov (Korea) to 2100/17 Nov (Korea)
1. Weather:
Weather during the period ranged from non-operational to operational.
On all days there was mid- to high-level broken cloud cover with rain. On
the last three days of the period there was fog in the central battle area.
Maximum temperature 57°, minimum 39°. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity, except in the west-central sector, diminished mark
edly during this period with five of the UN divisions reporting no enemy con-
tact during 13 November and six each reporting no contact on 14, 15, and
16 November. Heavy fighting occurred on HILL 391, northeast of CHORWON,
where enemy elements of up to reinforced-company strength forced UN ele-
ments to withdraw from OP positions on 14 November and successfully re-
sisted UN efforts to regain positions during the remainder of the period.
Action is continuing as the period closed. In the KUMHWA area, the enemy
elements of up to four-company strength forced UN elements to withdraw and
strongly opposed UN efforts to regain positions on SNIPER RIDGE. East of
SNIPER RIDGE, on a terrain feature known as ROCKY POINT, enemy ele-
ments attacked during the night of 13-14 November, but were forced to with-
draw by UN counterattacks during 14-15 November. However, enemy ele-
ments reoccupied portions of the position as the period closed. Elsewhere
across the front, sporadic probes against OP and MLR positions were re-
pulsed, and scattered, generally light opposition to UN patrol and raider
operations was reported. During the last three days of the period the entire
X US Corps sector reported only two minor patrol clashes, both of which
occurred on 14 November. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the period
totalled approximately 40,000 rounds, of which approximately 24, 600 rounds
fell in the IX US Corps sector, most of it in the SNIPER RIDGE area. Sight-
ings of enemy vehicle traffic totalled 11, 318, of which 6, 825 were south-
bound. (FECOM) (SECRET)
