JOINT SITREP NO. 556
(Maps attached)
From 0700/26 Nov (EST) to 0700/1 Dec (EST)
From 2100/26 Nov (Korea) to 2100/1 Dec (Korea)
1. Weather:
Weather throughout the period was generally poor with much rain and
snow. Only on 26 and 29 November was it operational, the other times ranging
from non-operational to marginal. On three days there was heavy fog in the
central area. Battle area temperatures ranged from a low of 28° to a high of
60° F. (FEAF) (SECRET)
200 Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity continued light throughout the period, characterized by
generally minor probes and patrol clashes. Action was highlighted on HILL
391, northeast of CHORWON, where, on 26 November, an enemy company
attacking from three directions, forced UN outpost elements to withdraw
after a two and one-half hour fight. However, the enemy later withdrew and
the position was reoccupied by UN elements without contact. Sporadic action
continued in the SNIPER RIDGE area throughout the period with enemy probes
of up to company strength being repulsed after engagements of up to two hours
duration. Enemy opposition to UN patrol and raider operations was highlighted
by two engagements with enemy companies in the west sector on 28 and 30
November, in the 1st ROK and 1st Marine Division sectors, respectively.
Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the five-day period totalled approximately
47,600 rounds, of which almost 28, 800 rounds fell in the IX US Corps sector.
Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic totalled 7, 193, of which 4, 565 were south
bound. During this five-day period, one day's sightings were negative owing
to poor weather. (FECOM) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
ARMY:
UN forces maintained positions, repulsing sporadic enemy probes in
all sectors, and continued aggressive patrol and raider operations throughout
the period. (FECOM) (SECRET)
