(Maps attached)
From 0700/15 Dec (EST) to 0700/18 Dec (EST)
From 2100/15 Dec (Korea)to 2100/18 Dec (Korea)
1. Weather:
The period began with a general low overcast with snow, with marginal
to non-operational conditions. The second day had broken high and low
level clouds with rain and snow that cleared on the last day of the period.
Battle area temperatures ranged from a maximum of 36° to a minimum of
16° F. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Fighting in the west sector dwindled to minor probes and patrol clashes.
In the east-central sector, the enemy continued probing activity against UN
positions in the SNIPER RIDGE/ROCKY POINT area, with groups of up to
two-platoon strength making five or more attacks each day; all probes were
repulsed after engagements of up to two hours' duration. Action diminished
in intensity as. the period closed. Elsewhere across the front, activity was
limited to generally minor enemy probes, mostly in the east-central sector,
and to scattered brief patrol clashes with small enemy groups. Activity
diminished as the period closed. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the
three-day period totalled approximately 14, 500 rounds, of which approximately
6, 100 rounds fell in the I US Corps sector. Enemy mortar and artillery fire
for the week ending 17 December, inclusive, totalled approximately 61, 000
rounds, of which more than 38, 600 fell in the I US Corps sector. More than
one-half of the week's total fell during the first two days of the week, most
of it in connection with the heavy fighting in the area northwest of YONCHON.
Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic for the three-day period totalled 6, 000, of
which 3, 809 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET)
