1. Weather:
Conditions during the period were generally marginal, with rain and
snow showers. On the 22₫ there was a broken low overcast that become
heavy with restricted visibility on the 23d. All of the central area was
covered with fog, haze, and smoke. Temperature: Maximum 41°,
minimum 18° F. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity continued generally light in all sectors throughout most
of the period. Action flared briefly in the west sector in the early morning
hours of 24 December, when an enemy battalion, following a ten-minute ar-
tillery preparation, attacked two outpost positions of the 2d US Division, about
eight miles west of CHORWON. The attack was repulsed after a four-hour
engagement, during which UN outpost elements were reinforced and success-
fully maintained their positions. Elsewhere, sporadic minor probes and scat-
tered brief patrol clashes characterized the ground action, with a slight in-
crease in the number of enemy contacts during 23 December. Hostile mortar
and artillery fire totalled about 6g 300 rounds, of which approximately 2, 000
fell in the I US Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic totalled 4, 738,
of which 2, 604 were southbound, (FECOM) (SECRET)
