1. Weather:
Weather throughout the period was generally good, becoming colder
each day. On the 24th there was extensive fog and haze in the battle
area and on the 27th there were scattered snow showers. Temperatures
ranged from a maximum of 41° to a minimum of 0°. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity was generally moderate across the front during
this five-day period, marked by continued sporadic probes and scattered
patrol clashes involving enemy groups usually of less than company strength,
in engagements generally less than one hour's duration. On 25 December,
an estimated reinforced company attacked MLR positions of the 45th US
Division, northwest of KAJON. On the same day, in the western sector, a
total of eight enemy armored vehicles, four at each location, fired on UN
positions south of PANMUNJOM (1st US Marine Division) and west of
CHORWON (2d US Division). Southeast of KUMSONG, on 27 December, an
estimated enemy company attacked positions of the 6th ROK Division; the
attack was repulsed after a 55-minute engagement. On the same day,
several probes by enemy groups of up to platoon=strength were made against
positions of the 40th US Division, west of KAJON; all were repulsed after
engagements of up to one hour's duration. On 28 December, an estimated
enemy company executed a ae-hour-and-fifty-minute probe against 9th
ROK Division positions at ROCKY POINT, northeast of KUMHWA, Elements
of the 3d ROK Division, also on 28 December, were engaged for over five
hours with an enemy platoon probing UN positions in the vicinity of the
PUKHAN RIVER. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the period totalled
about 27,000 rounds, of which approximately 8, 800 rounds fell in the I US
