Weather: Weather for the period ranged from nonoperational to operational. The first two days of the period had high-broken to overcast conditions, with rain and snow showers. The last day was marginal with broken clouds. Battle line temperatures ranged from a maximum of 250 to a minimum of 50.F. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity flared briefly during the night of 5-6 January in the west-central and east-central sectors and on the morning of 6 January in the central sector. Enemy activity decreased throughout the remainder of the period. In the west-central sector, during the night of 5-6 January, two enemy probes of company strength were made against OP positions of the 9th ROK Division at JANE RUSSELL HILL and on SNIPER RIDGE. Both attacks were repulsed after engagements of up to one-hour-and-twenty min- utes' duration. On the following day, three additional probes of platoon and two-platoon strength were repulsed in the SNIPER RIDGE area. In the cen- tral sector, in the early morning of 6 January, two probes of platoon and company strength were made against OP positions of the 3d ROK Division, four to five miles east of the PUKHAN RIVER. In one attack, UN elements were forced to withdraw and the enemy company followed to the MLR, where an engagement of 35 minutes resulted in 82 enemy killed and one cap- tured, About three miles southeast of this action, during the night of 5-6 January, two platoon=strength attacks, supported by approximately 1, 600 rounds of mortar and artillery fire, were repulsed from OP positions of the 7th ROK Division after engagements of up to one hour's duration. Elsewhere across the front, action was limited to minor probes and patrol clashes. On 6 January, there was no enemy contact reported in seven UN divisions sectors; on 7 January, there was no enemy contact reported from the vicinity of KORANGPO (I US Corps sector) to KUMHWA (IX US Corps sector).
