Weather: Weather on 8 and 10 January was generally good and operational, but on 9 January, there was a low, broken overcast with snow showers. On 10 January, conditions ranged from marginal to nonoperational with over- cast, snow, haze and tog. Battle area temperatures ranged from a max- imum of 450 to a minimum of 140 F. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2. Enemy Situation: Enemy activity increased during the period, with principal action occurring in the early morning of 12 January in the central and east-central sectors. On 9 January, three attacks, two of company and one of two-company strength, occurred against OP positions of the 11th ROK Division, northeast of KOM- SONG in the east sector. All attacks were repulsed after brief engagements. On the same day, enemy probes of platoon strength occurred in several other sectors. On the following day, attacks of platoon and company strength OC- curred in the 8th ROK and 3d ROK Divisions sectors, with attacks in the 3d ROK Division sector supported by over 1, 700 rounds of mortar and artillery fire. On 11 January, attacks by a reinforced platoon and an undetermined number of enemy were repulsed from ML.R positions of the 7th US Division in the vicinity of OLDBALDY, southwest of CHORWON. In the early morning 12 January, an energy company attacked OP positions in the same vicinity, but withdrew after one-hour-and-five-minutes of fighting. In the central sec tor, also on 12 January, two enemy companies attacked a company-strength OP of the 8th ROK Division, near the PUKHAN RIVER and were repulsed after a one-hour engagement, In the east-central sector, on the early morn- ing of 12 January, two enemy platoons attacked two adjacent MLR positions of the 12th ROK Division, northeast of KAJON. The enemy was reinforced to battalion strength during the action, but the attack was repulsed after one hour and forty minutes. Elsewhere during the period, minor probes and patrol clashes were reported. Hostile mortar and artillery fire for the four day period totalled approximately 22, 400 rounds, of which about 8, 000 rounds fell in the DX US Corps sector and about 5g 800 rounds fell in the I US Corps sector. Sightings of enemy vehicle traffic totalled 12g 173 for the four-day period, with one day's sightings negative owing to poor weather. Of the total, 8g 079 were southbound. (FECOM) (SECRET)
