    "ocrText": "-2-\nSparta\nBut, although the Democrats in Congress have saved the program by\ntheir solid support, the Republicans still have prevented the program from\nbeing carried forward by cutting down appropriations.\nI understand you have a Ropublican running for Governor in this\nState who is running on a program of soil conservation. Can you imagine that!\nAnd yet, they tell me this man doesn't even belong to the group of soil\nconservation. farmers in his own district. Yet he is running on a conserva-\ntion program. You better elect Thompson and save yourselves. Don't be\nfooled by Republican promises. Look at the record.\nYou know, the Republicans write a platform to got votes. They\ndon't write a platform to be carried out in a policy after the election is\nover. That is the sort of platform they have got right now -- the most\nhypocritical, deceitful document that has ever been written, and trying\nto be foisted off on the American public by the Republican candidate for\nPresident. Remember 1932 and what the Democratic program has meant to the\nUnited States since that time. Think, for example, what the Depar tment of\nAgriculturo is doing this year to help some of your local people here, north\nof Sparta, your cranberry growers: There is agreat surplus, and the\nDepartment is doing a terrific job of promotion to help sell that surplus.\nCranberry growers never received that kind of holp from asingle Republican\nadministration that I know of.\nThe story I have told you about soil conservation is just one of\nmany stories like it. Take rural electrification. They have tried their\nbest to strangle rural electrification; and I am told by the head of your\nrural lectrification set-up here in Wisconsin that if it were not for\nrural electrification, some of your private power companies would be on a\nbrown-out right now and yet, they would like to strangle it to death.\nThey have tried also to choke farm housing, rural education,\n1\nfarm-to-market roads, and cooperatives. On all these issues the tory is\njust the samo, and that is the reason I have to go around over the country\nand tell you about it. They are not going to toll you about it because\nthey couldn't get a single vote if they did tell the truth about how they\nstand on these issues.\nThe Democratic Party has been fighting to carry these measures for-\nward, but Republican leaders have done their best to slow them down or stop\ncompletely the progress We have been making. That 80th Congress -- oh, that\nawful 80th Congross -- proved that. That Congress shows what Republican\npolicy will be under a Republican adminis tration. And the Republican can-\ndidate for President/he's proud of the 80 th Congress. Can you imagine that !\nsays\nNow, the best way for you to take care of the situation is to vote\nin your own interests. Vote for yourselves, and when you vote for your-\nselves, you can't help but go to the polls on the second of November, and\nvote a straight Democratic tickot. You will be voting in your own interests,\nand you'll have a Democratic Congress and a Democratic President that will\nlook after the interests of the people, and not the special interests. That's\nthe issue in this campaign.\nRomember that and study it because it means everything in the\nworld to the people who live in this country.\nThank you very much.\n###"
