SPRINGFIELD -2- The first public schools in this country were founded here in Massachusetts. Ever since then, democracy and the public schools have gone hand in hand. Today public schools all over the Nation face a tremendous crisis. Classrooms are overcrowded, buildings are antiquated, and teachers are undorpaid. Again and again, I urgod the Ropublican 80th Congross to pass legislation to extend Federal assistance to the State public school systems, just as the Federal Government helps States to build highways. You'd think everybody ould agree that school-childron are at least as important as the highways over which the school buses carry them to the school-house. But the Republican Congross shid, "Nothing doing -- we're against it!" The Republican candidato has committed himself on this issue of education in words he cannot deny, He's against it, too. I have right here in my hand tologrons from two of our State Governors. The Governor of Utah and the Governor of Maryland both bear witness to the vicious attack which the Republican candidate for Presidont made on this Nation's school teachers at the last Governors Conference in Portsmouth, Now Hampshire. Governor Lane of Maryland says in his telegram that the Republican candidato said: "The school lobby is the most vicious and dishonest/ir lobby the country. It is worse than all of the rost of them put together. One of the lios they tell is that Russia spends more money on public education than WO do in this country. il That is what Governor Lane of Maryland reports that the Republican candidato sàid. The Republican candidate made that statement in the presence of nino Governors. Governor Maw of Utah confirms this fact. Governor Maw says in his telegram that the Republican candidate said that the teachers' lobby would dostroy the State Governments of the nation wanted. by supporting only those candidatos who would give hem what they Maybe the Ropublican candidate is afrai d the teachers will support only those candidates who believe teachers are entitled to a decent living wage. The Republican candidate has said that the teachers' lobby is more vicious than the power, or real estate, or oil, or liquor lobbies of the country. Those are the Republican candidate's views, as reported in this telegram from the Governor of Utah, who heard the Republican candidate speak. Now I know only one way to combat that totally un-American point of view on the public schools. That is to maintain a Government at /ashington that repre- sents the people, andnet the special interests and privileged groups.
