(AS ACTUALLY DELIVERED)
I must say, though, that some of you are partly to blamo for this, because
you didn't voto in 1946: That Ropublican do-nothing 80th Congross did all
it could to start us back down that dismal road.

Horo's another one. At Baltimoro just beforo the 1944 oloction tho
SERVICE"
Ropublican candidato said: "Wo must havo a Prosidont who can and will work
with Congross. Ho said ho "would liko to start the largost houso-cloaning
Washington ovor had." That sounds familiar, too, docsn't it? Now ho is
playing the same old rocord again, and the rocord is stuck in the same old
groovo. What a wondorful thing it was for tho pooplo of this Unitod States
that they didn't have a Prosident who would go along with that good-for-nothing
80th Congross! Now, ho was spoaking of the war-timo administration of one of
the groatost man in history, who was leading a unitod poopló to victory in tho
groatost war of all timo. Roosovolt bolioved in the pooplo, and tho pooplo
belioved in Roosovolt -- and so did I. Evon with millions of mon oversoas and
away from thoir homos the Roosovolt tickot won in 1944. Lot mo unt it
difforontly: The Ropublicens lost and the pooplo won again in 1944.
You know what happened thon. Wo won the war in tho most completo military
victory ovor rocorded in history. And since the war wo have onjoyed the
groatost poaco-timo prospority in our history.
My friends, that's the rocord. And as A1 Smith said, "If you look at the
rocord, you can't go wrong. The rocord of Ropublican lure and Democratic
success -- that's why tho Rovublican candidato won't follow no whon I talk
about tho rocord.
Thoro sanothor place also where ho won't follow mo. Ho won't follow mo
in discussing the issuos of this compaign.
Ho can follow nro into Framingham, Massachusotts, but ho won't follow me
in raising the minimum wago to at least 75 conts an hour. Ho said in this
campaign that ho is for a minimum wago -- and I think the smallor tho,
minimum the bottor it suits him.
Ho can follow no into Clovoland, but ho won't follow me and broadon the
covorago of our social socurity insurance laws and incroaso thoir bonofits
by 50 por cont. You know, an old couplo now only got $40 a month, and that's
mighty littlo -- just like that minimum wago -- $16 a wook. I'vo said time
and again around this country that I wish that the Ropublicm Congrossmon could
have to livo in Washington for a while on $16 a wook or $40 a month. I think
thoy would change thoir minds just a littlo bit.
He can follow no into Chicago, but hc won't follow no in donanding that
Congross pass laws for hoalth insurance and modical caro. You know, it's a
shamo and a disgraco that a Country as rich and as important as this groat
Country is today the leader of all' the world -- is not ablo to givo the
people in tho middlo the propor kind of modical care. I'vo asked for hoalth
insurance because hoalth insuranco is tho answer to a hoalthy Nation -- and
somo day wo! ro going to got it.
He can follow mo into Boston, but ho won't follow mo in calling for
Fodoral aid to oducation so that teachors can got a living wago, and so that
modern schools can be built, and so that our childron can got a docont oducation
That' S anothor disgrace on this groat Country. And our Ropublican opponont
has said that tho teachers' lobby -- ho callod it "Tho Toachers' Organization";
he's trying to work against tho teachors' lobby -- ho says it's the most
vicious thing in this Country. Vicious because the teachors want to got a
living wago and because thoy want to get docont housing for our school childron!
Now, we give money to tho Statos to build roads. Why can't we also give monoy
to tho Statos from the Foderal Govornment to build school houses and pay
teachors? I think it's much more important to see that the childron that ridc
in the busos over those roads got the proper kind of schooling and the proper
sort of teachers than it is to build tho roads, myself. Ho doesn't go ong
with me on that.
Ho can follow no to Pittsfiold and Providenco, but whon ho gots thòre thoy
noodn't expect him to givo thom any help on low-cost housing. You know, low-cos
housos have been before the Congross for throo years. It passod the Sonato
twico. First it was the Wagnor-Ellondor-Taft bill. That was killod. And thon
thoy introducod a now bill in the 80th Congress and thoy callod it the Taft-
Ellondor-Wagnor bill. And when it cano up for considoration the Rópublican
londorship in the Houso of Roprosontativos wouldn't even lot it in, and tho
Mombors of Congress in the Lower House couldn't ovon voto on it; and whon it
camo back for roconsidoration in the Senato Mr. Taft ran out on his own bill.
I don't undorstand that.
