There are some liberals in the Republican Party,
but I feel sorry for them. The Republican Party
either corrupts its liberals or it expels them.
They drove out Theodore Roosevelt in Nineteen Twelve.
They drove out the elder La Follette -
Fighting Bob of Wisconsin - in Nineteen Twenty-Four.
It was the Democratic Party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt,
not the Republican Party, that held out the hand of welcome
to Floyd B. Olson and to that hero of progressive idealism --
the late George Norris of Nebraska.
And those liberals
who have not been driven out of the Republican Party
have been changed, over the years,
like your own senior Senator,
from fighters on the people's side
into harsh and bitter mouthpieces for reaction.
