HARRY December 7, 1946 : My dear Mrs. Bethune: It isn't necessary for you to write me urging the retention of the United States Employment Service in the Federal set-up. I suggested that program to the Congress on at least three different occasions and they voted no down on it every time. They have returned it to the States now and I doubt seriously whether it will ever again be a Federal Agency. There is a very good chance that its appropriations will be very materially slashed in the next Congress - that seens to be what the people want. Sincerely yours, HARRY S. TRUMAN Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethune 1318 Vermont Avenue, Northwest Washington 5, D. C.
