(SC) REC'd 12:18 p.m. Secretary of State, ON Mic POLITICAL RLS. Mary FAB EASTEBN AFEAIRS Washington. JUN it 1942 (A) 110 Department of 656, June 3, 4 p.m. COMPANTMENT OF STATE the Your 464, June 1, 10 p.m. 1340 CF Our 622 May 28, 9 R.M., was intended simply to indicate that despite official Chinese pressure and the clamor in the press here and in America on nid to China, there are at least some thinking Chinese who take A more raalistic and objective view. ThEir opinions, however, are not influential. - I recommended increased air support to China, if practicable, in view of the increasing difficult military situation in this country, and to give more concrete Evidence that WE regard the China theatre of some importance. With the blocking of the Burma road, support only is really practicable and that only on a limitEd scale (which America and Fritain should both seek to provide.) Large scale air support would require facilities, personnel, and supplies within Chine which do not Exist and which it. would be difficult if not impossible to provide.
