Yuan balances. One of the difficulties in reaching conclusions here is that
no one in Washington is able to estimate, with any degree of accuracy, the
magnitude of the transfer of supplies and services which will be required to
carry out our existing objectives, nor can there be estimated here the amounts
of Yuan advances and expenditures which may be required in the future by US
forces in China. It is expected that the War Department will request General
Wedemeyer to furnish estimates on these questions within the next day or two.
Their prompt receipt is essential to enable the interested Departments to
keep the President advised.
Three. If there is additional information on either of the above subjects
which you desire to receive informally in advance of formal communication, please
advise.
