Jefferson was born on April 2, 1743, Old Style, April Thirteenth by our present reckoning, at Shadwell, Virginia. His father wa3 a large lend-owner and slaveholder. He wes the eldest of eight children, started to school at five, went to Latin School at nine, entered Williem and Mary College at seventeen. He stayed at that school two years and then sterted the atudy of law in the office of George Wythe considered tha greatest lawyer of his time, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and law preceptor of Henry Clay. Jefferson was admitted to practice in Virginie in 1767. lie was a successful lawyer for a short time, and then in 1769 he was elected to the provincial legisleture of Virginie and bie public career begen.
