Release for use after 7:30 P.M. Pacific War time October 16, 1944. SPEECH OF HONORABLE HARRY S. TRUMAN TO BE DELIVERED OCTOBER 16 AT LOS ANGELES - SHRINE AUDITORIUM Permit me to congratulate you people of Los Angeles for the mighty fine job you have done in producing airplanes and ships and many other items of war material. As Chairman of the Truman Senate Committee, it was my duty and privilege to drive for greater production and to check and re-check to make sure that our soldiers abtained the weapons they need to beat the enemy. The backing of the public helped us get results. When we found laggards, we never hesitated to force improve- ment. When we found obstacles, we went to work to remove them. But when we found a good job, we said so, and the Committee unanimously, Democrats and Republicans alike, agreed that by and large a splendid job was done. Our soldiers and sailors are getting what they need to-win this war. A good job was turned in here in California. We never had to criticize you. Our efforts were confined to helping you overcome some of your problems. You helped to prove that the United States could tut- produse the world in war as well as in peace. You helped to confound the doubting Thomases who scoffed at the goals set by the President as fantastic. The Republican candidate quoted me. I now quote him. In referring to the President's request for 50,000 planes to protect America, he said: "But what is the good of talking about 50,000 planes unless we know what we are about and are prepared to do about it. * * Experts estimate that it would take at least TRUMAN four years to accomplish this. * CO NARA It is very disturbing to find the Pres- ident so blandly confident in our hope- lessly inadequate defenses. "
