HARRY S. TRUMAN, U. S. SENATOR AND FOREMAN OF THE SENATE'S WAR GRAND JURY By Leighton Shields Harry S. Truman, soldier, Democrat, Baptist, Masonic Past Grand Master, and native Missourian, was born in Lamar, county seat of Barton County, Mo., on May 8, 1884. The Trumans believed in the Bible, the eternal vigor of American ideals and institutions, and a substantial edu- cation for their children. Harry received his common school education by work and by will in the public schools of Independence, Mo., sometimes interrupted by labor on the farm where all members of his family had to TRUMAN do their part. The Noland and Columbian Grade Schools and the Indepen- dence High School honored him and he has honored them. S. ARCHIVES **NATIONAL SERVICE" RECOROS AND LIG First Later on, with the idea of making the law a career, he attended Es COVERNER the Kansas City Law School for awhile, but as he had received his early education the hard way, the demands of the time made him turn to business and led him from a scholarly early training. He had to meet necessity and consider a practical course to maintain himself. So in 1901 he was filling a subordinate job in the mail room of one of the local newspapers, the Kansas City Star. When boys of his age who had started from the top were attending college, Truman turned to earn a living by working for a practical railroad man who was building new railroads. Young Truman then tried his hand at banking, -- that is, he was one of scores of bank employees used in 1903 through 1905 by the National Bank of Commerce and the Union National Bank, of Kansas City. But a business career could not be easily won by a boy beginning from the very bottom. There was too much competition from money and from monied families who could start their boys near the top. So Harry Truman returned to the farm to win his living a slower
