OCR Page 1 of 23DRAFT OF SPEECH BY SENATOR HARRY S. TRUMAN
This is one of the most crucial elections in
our history. We are in the midst of the most terrible
war of all time. Although we are moving swiftly and
inexorably toward victory, we must not forget that the
final and decisive blows are still to be struck and that
a great price in blood and tears is still to be paid.
This war must be won and won quickly, so that our fighting
men can come home. This requires vigorous and effective
leadership.
Equal in importance to the task of winning the
war is the task of seeing to it that our children will not
have to fight again twenty-five years from now. We dare not,
we must not fail in this task. We must plan and build an
international organization that will make wars impossible.
