It is estimited that Grand Coulce alonc can provide sufficiont wotor
to irrigato 1,200,000 acres of fortilc but arid land. Whon that land is
irrigetcd, it will support 350,000 people on farms and in ci ties and towns
dependent upon them. The t shows what con do when to have the vision and
the will to go forward.
These projects must, bc corried thr ugh to complction, and others
li o thom must bc initiatodo New industrics must bc ostobli shed to utilizo
the powcr, and cxisting industrics must bo encouragod to expend.
Many millions of dollars have be n spont in the Pacific Northwost for
aluminum and magncsium plants. For exmple, ve built ncor Spokano one of
the world's larges t and mos t nodern aluminum rolling nills at a cost to
the Govornnent of more than $50,000,000. That nill and othor projects for
the fabrico tion of finished and soni-finished products must bc kept in
opcration.
The facilitics provided for wer production will form the nuclous for
c. great prospcrity for the entiro nation, if wc have the courage and the
vision to ser to it that they are kcp in opcration. If their omployees are
thrown out of work and plents are dismontlod or allowed to lic idlo, the
injury will be bsyond calculo tion.
