OCR Page 1 of 15If we could go to old Father Time and just out of curiosity
ask him to push this Jefferson Day celebration back about a century and a
half, I think we might find ourselves in the middle of a pretty lively
scene here in North Carolina.
Chances are the fur would fly.
You see, I've been wondering about it because the other day I
came across a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote in April of 1809. In it
he said:
"North Carolina is at present the most dangerous state. The
lawyers all tories, the people substantially republican, but uninformed
and deceived by the lawyers, who are elected of necessity because few
others are candidates."
What a. sad state of affairs! Of course it wasn't so bad as it
might have been, beceuse when Jefferson said that the people of North
Carolina were "substantially republican, # he was referring to his own
liberal following, who called themselves "republicans" in that day.
