SENATOR TRUMAN'S SPEECH CONCERNING THE INTERIM REPORT
TO BE delivered TO ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 1942
The special committee of 10 Members of the Senate, appointed
<s
pursuant to Senate Resolution 71, to make a rull and complete study
and investigation of the operation of the national defense program,
herewith submits an interim report covering the matters which have
been considered by it during the year 1941.
The committee has held public hearings commencing April 15,
1941. To date 252 witnesses have testified, some of them on a number
of different occasions. The printed record of such testimony comprises
more than 3,000 pages. The committee also privately considered a
number of matters as to which the committee was unable to schedule
public hearings.
The committeo's principal purpose is to ascertain that the
billions of dollars being allocated to the national-defonse program
are being efficiently and economically expended so as to obtain a
maximum of production with a minimum of expense, and a minimum of
dislocation to the civilian economy.
