SPEECH OF SENATOR HARRY S. TRUMAN OF MISSOURI CARUTHERSVILLE, MISSOURI OCT 1942 TO BE RELEASED ON DELIVERY It, was just three years ago that I had the pleasure of being with my friends who were gathered here at Caruthersville. At that time we discussed the great threat that was then apparent to our country. Our thoughts were -- was it possible to keep America out of war. At that time the thunderbolt of Nozi aggression was held above the heads of the civilized world. Today that thunderbolt has fallen. Today the Nazi hordes have over-run Poland, France and virtually every part of Continental Europe. In the Western Pacific the gangster nation, the Nipponese, has over- whelmed the Philippines, Malaya, Dutch East Indies and are savagely attacking our American troops in the Solomons. Alaska and our West Coast have seen the occupation of Kiska in the Aleutian Isles. However when the savage blow foll which brought the United States fully into the war -- the d astardly attack of the Japanose on Pearl Harbor -- we were not completely unprepared. U.S.
