OCR Page 1 of 9SPEECH OF SENATOR HARRY S. TRUMAN OF MISSOURI
CARUTHERSVILLE, MISSOURI
OCT 1942
TO BE RELEASED ON DELIVERY
It, was just three years ago that I had the pleasure of being with
my friends who were gathered here at Caruthersville. At that time we
discussed the great threat that was then apparent to our country. Our
thoughts were -- was it possible to keep America out of war. At
that time the thunderbolt of Nozi aggression was held above the heads
of the civilized world. Today that thunderbolt has fallen. Today the
Nazi hordes have over-run Poland, France and virtually every part of
Continental Europe.
In the Western Pacific the gangster nation, the Nipponese, has over-
whelmed the Philippines, Malaya, Dutch East Indies and are savagely
attacking our American troops in the Solomons. Alaska and our West
Coast have seen the occupation of Kiska in the Aleutian Isles.
However when the savage blow foll which brought the United States
fully into the war -- the d astardly attack of the Japanose on Pearl
Harbor -- we were not completely unprepared.
