SPEECH TO BE DELIVERED BY SENATOR HARRY S. TRUMAN BEFORE THE MEETING OF THE MISSOURI FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS AT JEFFERSON HOTEL; ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, MAY 14, 1943. TO BE RELEASED ON DELIVERY It is a privilege and honor for me to address members of the Missouri Federation of Women's Clubs. Ever since your organization was founded you have fostered education. You have promoted good citizenship--you have loaned your great support to many worthy causes. You have avoided partisanship and you have acted in unison. In short, you have done things in the American way and you have helped to make America strong. This meeting here today is typical of that American way of doing things. We have the opportunity to gather together and discuss-among ourselves the problems that confront us. This opportunity is also a right - the right of all free people to meet, at their own time, at their own will, and in their own way. This is just as representative of America as the American flag. It proves that America became a great nation because long ago we dedicated our- selves to the principles of free government by free people. Our cause is just in this world at war. Yet moral right is not enough. This is a practical war too, being fought by practical men. It will be won by practical men using practical means. In this, the greatest war effort in our entire history, we know that there are great dangers we must guard against. Our problems today are so complex, so intricate, and so interlocking that what affects one phase of our war program automatically affects other phases as well. Thousands of death-dealing tanks are useless if there are no ships to bring them to the f ighting fronts. Swarms of bombers, f 'ighter and interceptor planes are harmless if there is not e nough aviation gasoline to keep them flying. America must organize and reorganize her program, until there is a single, unified war plan. The State, the War and the Navy Departments of our TRUMAN I ADMIN <s CONTRACT
