SPEECH OF THE HONORABLE HARRY S. TRUMAN VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO BL RELEASED ON DELIVERY ERIE COUNTY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE GROVER CLEVELAND DINNER STATLER HOTEL BUFFALO, NEW YORK Blue Network Broadcast time 10:30 to 10:45 PM E.W.T. April 7, 1945 THE JOB AHEAD It is a real privilege and pleasure to be with you leaders of New York State at this dinner held in honor of your distinguished statesman from Buffalo, formerly your Mayor, your Governor, and our President -- Grover Cleveland. The State of New York is also fortunate in the representation it now has in the Senate of the United States - the able and distinguished Bob Wagner and your own Jim Mead. You all know that Jim succeeded me as Chairman of the Special Committee to investigate the wor program. Under his direction I em proud to say - that Committee is achieving a great record. This dingr is for more than 3. political gathering. It really is another testimonial of our firm faith in American democracy, the same faith which Grover Cleveland retained during his life-long struggle for democratic ideals. You people of Buffalo, situated at the western gate of the Empire State, have already performed a gigantic war task for America and our fighting Allies. Farms and factories of New York are producing the all- essential supplies needed for victory. Your brave sons are fighting to bring this victory nearer. Your firm determinition that democracy shall survive is one of the bulwarks of our mighty nation. All Americans must unite and support our national leader in order to achieve victory in the difficult job chead. Whenever they are strongly united for a good cause, victory goes to the aggressive champions of the peoples wolfare. We Americans are especially fortunate in having as our'political leader one of the greatest living statesmen in the world -- President Franklin Delano Roosevelt! Our nation has become the mightiest military force in the world. With the return of peace, we should divert our wartime energies to improving our national economic structure. That is essential to remain in the van- TRUMAN guard of social progress. To achieve this peacetime goal, there must be NARA useful jobs for all willing hands. This cannot be attained merely by wishing and vaiting. It requires careful planning and hard work.
