brary.
Her husband was for
many years a school trus-
tee and, working with him,
she was largely responsi-
ble in securing the first
public health service for
the schools of Monterey.
She also was active in the
early days of the Monterey
chapter of the Red Cross.
In later years, during the
depression of the '30s, Mrs.
Sargent was a dedicated
volunteer worker for the
Monterey Community Cen-
ter.
The graveside rites were
held at the family plot in
Monterey Catholic Ceme-
tery.
The family prefers me-
morial contributions to the
building fund of Ave Maria
Convalescent Hospital, 1249
Jossleyn Canyon Rd., Mon-
terey.
Mission Mortuary was in
charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Adelaide Hafner
Chaney, 71, died last eve-
ning at her Monterey Pen-
insula Country Club home,
1088 Lariat Lane. While she
had been in ill health for
some time, death was
unexpected.
Mrs. Chaney was born
Oct. 23, 1894, in Hempsted,
Tex.
With her husband, Verne
E. Chaney, she came 81/2
years ago from Santa Bar-
bara to make a home in
the Country Club.
In addition to her hus-
band, she leaves a daugh-
ter, Mrs. Constance C.
Tucker of Carlsbad, N. M.;
a son, Dr. Verne E. Chan-
ey Jr. of San Francisco,
head of the Tom Dooley
Foundation; a brother, Al-
fred Hafner of Pine Lawn,
Mo.: and five grandchil-
dren: Christopher Chaney
of Careapolis, Pa., Steven
Chaney of Roswell, N. M.,
Robert, Drucilla and Cath-
erine Tucker of Carlsbad,
N.M.
Funeral services will be
held at 11 a.m. Wednesday
Sea, the with Little Rev. Chapel-by-the- Peter Far-
in
mer pal Church of All officiating. Saints' Episco- Bur-
rial will take place in El
Carmelo Cemetery. The
Paul Mortuary is in charge
of arrangements.
