:H HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL CENTEL
Kansas City, Missouri
TRUMAN, Harry s.
Wallace H. Graham
Ex-president Truman was admitted to the Research Hospital with
complaints of having continued pain and cramping throughout the
entire abdomen, with particular pains in the lower pelvis. He's
had this distress present the past week and the past four days he
has
had considerable, seemingly, constipation with intermittent
diarrhea, yet never having a complete bowel movement. He has been
leading a rather sedentary life the past month and has not been
taking his usual walks and he develops constipation and discomfort
from this standpoint. He has occasional vertigo. This has been
present in the past, however. He tends to be somewhat unstable
when walking or standing. He has been wearing a cane for some time,
however he does not wish actual help to any degree and tries to
put his clothes on himself sometimes and gets tangled in the leg
of his trousers or some other similar episode and he tends to fall
very easily at this time.
He has also been complaining of considerable nausea the past four
days and that seems to be more alarming as this has not been true
of the past. It is known, however, that he has a redundancy of
mucous membrane of the gastric pouch which protrudes through the
pylorus and into the duodenum at times and it is believed that this
is the present problem as an etiological factor in his nausea.
However, this must be studied and evaluated from this standpoint,
at this time as a possibility. He has been noticeably more dis-
oriented the past three weeks than previously. He tends to lose
his trend of thought rather easily. However, he answers questions
very intelligently and he continues to have a good sense of humor.
He is quite direct and answers very straightforward.
At the present time, he is probably suffering with a fecal impaction
in the sigmoid. This seems to be a place of irritation and chronic
recurrence of the problem and will be studied carefully to determine
whether there is any other type of lesion present.
In his general systemic review, eyes, ears, nose, and throat haven'
changed any. His sight is quite good and he reads quite prodigiously.
He has frequent vertigo.
Cardio-respiratory system is entirely normal and negative. He
does, however, have occasional swelling edema of the feet. This
is somewhat unusual, however.
